Even after two years of the corona pandemic, the Federal Republic is one of the world’s most popular countries for international students. The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD) announced today that around 350,000 of them were registered at German universities in the winter semester 2021/22. This figure is a new record, and represents a growth of eight per cent compared to the previous year. After declines due to the coronavirus, the number of international first-year students even rose in the previous winter semester, to almost 74,000.

According to a recent OECD report, the Federal Republic of Germany is among the top nations for international students and graduates. According to the DAAD, the study supports Germany's excellent reputation as a center for science and higher education. However, the dropout rates of international students still have room for improvement.

German universities, like most universities around the world, maintain a broad network of international partnerships. The DAAD supports such international partnerships through several schemes that foster cooperation among higher education institutions. An essential component in the internationalization of universities is the establishment and implementation of joint strategic partnerships and cooperation projects. For this purpose, DAAD offers various instruments and program lines with which partnerships and cooperation projects can be funded. In this month’s portrait, we talk to Nathan Taremwa from Rwanda about the DAAD’s involvement in projects in Rwanda:
